'Cave Creatures' book hits the shelves

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado - David Steinmann, a noted cave biologist and research associate at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, has released a new book about creatures living inside the Glenwood Caverns and Historic Fairy Caves.

"Cave Creatures of Glenwood Caverns" features never-before-seen photos of new species and life forms found only in the cave system that underlies Iron Mountain in north Glenwood.

Steinmann has found more than 100 new species in the caves of Colorado, including 20 different species at Glenwood Caverns.

The most notable is Cryptocreagris steinmanni, a rare pseudoscorpion named after Steinmann, which is featured on the book's cover. Steinmann also found new species of millipedes and beetles.

The book includes electron microscope and magnified images, with details on each of the species.

"There is much more to be discovered in Glenwood Caverns, which is an underground oasis," said Steinmann, who is also a volunteer firefighter, a wetlands biologist and a rare plant specialist.

"All of the creatures I've found in the cave are tiny and harmless," he added.

"Preservation of the cave and all of the life within has been our priority since the beginning," said Steve Beckley, who owns Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park with his wife, Jeanne.

"This book shows that there are still important scientific discoveries being made," Beckley added. "We appreciate David's dedication and hard work over the years to make this happen."

"Cave Creatures of Glenwood Caverns" is available for $9.95 at the General Store gift shop at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, at the Book Train in downtown Glenwood Springs and online at Amazon.com.
