Seasons collide at Winter Jamboree

GLENWOOD SPRINGS - Think summer.

That's the theme Saturday night as the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts hosts its inaugural Winter Jamboree fundraising event to support the annual Summer of Music series.

"We have got some exciting treats planned for Glenwood Springs, and this year's Summer of Music series is set to get everyone dancing," said Christina Brusig, Center for the Arts assistant director. "We have selected great bands, all with unique big band sounds that will truly leave people humming as the concerts come to an end."

A first for the music series' fundraising efforts, Saturday's Winter Jamboree features food from the Haute Plate Bistro, microbrews from the Glenwood Canyon Brewing Co. and Rifle Brewing Co., and live music by valley favorites Matt Haslett and All the Pretty Horses, of Carbondale.

All the Pretty Horses were local openers at last summer's free music series.

"Matt and the Pretty Horses are true grassroots performers, and for that we adore them," Brusig said. "We enjoy their original music and value their ideals as musicians. They are willing to help the good ole' Summer of Music series out by donating this concert to us because they believe in paying it forward for the community. We absolutely love being a part of their music circle."

The stage is set for the Winter Jamboree with support from local sound, lighting and production experts David Darling, Matt Solstez and David Reynolds. Darling, a member of the music series committee, said Saturday's party will be a good time for a good cause.

"It's just all about fun and music," he said. "This is the first year for the Winter Jamboree, and we plan to make it even bigger next year."

Solstez, also a member of the volunteer Summer of Music committee, agreed.

"It will be a freaking blast," he said. "It's the inaugural event, and we hope to continue this every year and carry on the tradition," he said. "Winter Jamboree will have all the attributes of a big party. This is a rare opportunity to have everyone come together in the winter to prepare for the summer music."

Darling said singer-songwriter Haslett and All the Pretty Horses, which plays a blend of Americana and cowboy music, are a perfect fit for promoting the upcoming six-week season of live summer music at Two Rivers Park, which starts the last week of June.

"We wanted to remind people that we need sponsors for Summer of Music and also have a little party at the same time," Darling said. "All the Pretty Horses opened for us last year, and they're all big supporters of the music series."

This summer's season features six bands of different genres, Darling said. Four of the six bands are already set to perform in June and July. The roster includes Chris Daniels and the Kings, The Congress, Western Colorado Big Band - a 27-piece jazz-centric big band - and Wil Campa, a festive 14-member Cuban band.

"We're really trying to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes," Darling said.

Brusig said people can expect festive foot-stomping music Saturday to get pumped for the summer.

"A rockin' good time will be had by all to benefit a group that helps makes Glenwood truly incredible," she said.

The Summer of Music series committee hopes Saturday's fundraiser will attract new supporters and sponsors to continue the tradition of free live music in the park every summer in Glenwood.

"For the first time ever, we are facing to possibility of having to pay park rental fees," Brusig said. "And we are running $6,000 short from previous years, as one of our sponsors from years past can no longer commit to providing us with a free show."

The Winter Jamboree begins with Haslett's guitar stylings at 6 p.m., followed by All The Pretty Horses at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and $25 per couple, and all proceeds benefit the 2013 Summer of Music series.
