Edward Nelson Juhan

Edward Nelson Juhan, age 86, died January 22 in Lakewood, Colorado. Ed was born July 1, 1926 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to Joe T. and Genevieve Juhan.

Tales of his childhood include earning pennies by selling cakes his mother baked, participating in the town soapbox derby and burning down the neighbor's barn. He attended Garfield County High School in Glenwood Springs, and received his high school diploma from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri, where he spent two and a half years in high school and junior college. He studied Petroleum Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Westminster College in Salt Lake City.

It was there that he met and married Georgene "Jean" Montague. In 1954, he received his LLB from the University of Denver Law School. In 1955, he was named Assistant State Attorney General and held this position until establishing his own law practice in 1956. Ed was elected District Attorney for the First Judicial District of Colorado in 1964, serving until 1968. Prior to being elected, he was Deputy District Attorney. He was appointed by Governor Love and served as Commissioner of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from Oct.9, 1969 - June 1, 1972 and was reappointed as Vice Chairman 1972-1977.

In 1998, Ed established a Scholarship at Westminster College for students exhibiting leadership and financial need. Later in his career he pursued oil and gas law and development. He was recognized by the Colorado Bar Association with the status of Honor Life Member in 2004. In Ed's younger years he enjoyed both snow and water skiing, then his passions turned to golf and cruises.

He loved champagne, caviar and a good steak; and he'd work that off by waltzing around the dance floor. He'll be remembered for his ever present generosity, humor and thoughtfulness.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Hunter of Helena, Montana; companion of 30 years, Sandra Whistler; daughters Becky Crawford and Susan Ray (Neil) and his grandsons, Jeremy and Ryan Crawford. No services are planned. Please share condolences at HoranCares.com.
