Last Saturday, the Glenwood Springs Grizzly Midget hockey team stepped onto their home ice to face the DU Jr. Pioneers.
Adding two more points and moving up in the standings in the CDCC, the Grizzlies opened with a 5-4 win over the Pioneers.
The DU Juniors started the scoring with two quick goals in the first period. In the second period the Grizzlies found a sense of urgency, starting with a goal by sophomore Sam Carmer.
The Grizzlies were able to put in two more by junior Jackson Wilson, including the game winner with 15 seconds left in the third period. Sophomore Schyler Stratton provided solid goal-tending for the Grizzlies with 22 saves.
"I was rather disappointed with the offensive production in the first period," Grizzlies assistant coach Trace Apostolik said. "But with good effort in the second and third they were able to put a smile on my face. And I don't smile very often."
The Grizzlies came back to the Cave to face off against the NCYH Jr. Eagles for their annual parent and sponsorship appreciation game.
Wilson netted two quick goals, but the Grizzlies went on to lose this game, 5-2.
"By far our worst second and third period of the year, and at this point in the year we should be peaking, but this was a valley for us," head coach Tim Cota commented. "I'm confident our boys will respond appropriately. We all need to get better."
This brings the Midget team's record to 13-9-5, including league and tournament play. The Grizzlies have a short trip to Eagle to play The Vail Mountaineers, and Regis Jesuit this coming weekend.
