Garfield County Sheriff's Report

Editor's note: The Garfield County Sheriff's Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Unattended death: At 4:14 p.m. on Feb. 6, deputies were called to an unattended death at an undisclosed location in Rifle. The case remained open pending a coroner's report as of Feb. 12.

Something's missing: At 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 6, deputies were called to investigate a theft of unknown items at 14913 Highway 82 near Carbondale. The case is closed and inactive pending further leads.

DUI, etc.: At 8:33 p.m. on Feb. 7, deputies were called to a reported domestic disturbance at 400 W. 16th St. near Rifle. After investigation, Robert S. Campbell, 25, of Silt was booked into the Garfield County Jail on charges of third degree assault, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and domestic violence.

Vandals: Three separate reports on Feb. 8 - one at 7:49 a.m. at 11 E. Silverbell Place, one at 8:39 a.m. at 271 Blackhawk Trail, and one at 8:49 a.m. at 140 Carson Circle - involved vandalism by an unknown person or persons. According to deputies responding to the reports, there were no suspects as of Feb. 8.

DUI near Carbondale: At 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding on County Road 100 (Catherine Store Road) outside of Carbondale. The deputies subsequently arrested Tiffany Gene Fewell, 23, of Six Lakes (no state given), on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, weaving on the roadway, and speeding 10-19 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Underage possession: At 1:51 a.m. on Feb. 9, deputies stopped a vehicle on Main Street outside of Silt, for weaving on the roadway, and arrested Jeremy Dillon Poulain, 19, of Rifle. He was booked into the Garfield County Jail on charges of underage possession of alcohol, driving without a valid license, weaving, driving a vehicle with excessive alcohol content, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Failure to Appear: At 1:18 p.m. on Feb. 9, deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding on County Road 221 (Green Lane) outside of Rifle. After an investigation, deputies learned the driver was wanted for failing to appear in court. Benito Cardenas Reyes, 56, of Grand Junction, was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of speeding 10-19 miles per hour over the limit, and failing to appear in court.

Speeding, etc.: At 1:27 a.m. on Feb. 10, deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 82 near Carbondale. After making inquiries, deputies arrested Osvaldo Alvarez-Vasquez, 31, of Glenwood Springs, and booked him into the county jail on charges of driving without a valid license, careless driving, criminal impersonation, driving while license revoked, speeding, failure to display valid registration, and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

DUI: At 2:14 a.m. on Feb. 10, deputies stopped a vehicle for failure to stop at a stop sign. Deputies subsequently arrested Steve Leon Read, 45, of Rifle, and booked him into the county jail on charges of running a stop sign, driving a vehicle with excessive alcohol content, and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Vehicle theft: At 6:37 p.m. on Feb. 11, a deputy responded to a reported vehicle theft, at an undisclosed address near Glenwood Springs. No suspects were identified, and no arrests were made at the time of the report. The case remains open pending further evidence.
