Silt seeks state funds for second phase of skate park

SILT, Colorado - The town is hoping for a $79,500 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) for the second phase of construction at the town's Skateboard Park, located at 648 N. Seventh St. near the Stoney Ridge Pavilion.

The town trustees on Monday unanimously passed a resolution in support of the GOCO grant application, with plans to resume work on the skate park next summer.

GOCO, a nonprofit organization, was created by the state's voters in 1980, along with the Colorado Lottery. The organization gets 50 percent of the proceeds of the state lottery, to be used for parks, recreation programs and open space purposes in towns and cities throughout Colorado.

The park, on which work began in June 2012, is expected to cost a total of approximately $387,000 by the time it is all said and done, according to Town Administrator Pamela Woods.

Phase one, she said, cost $53,000 to build the concrete base for the park, along with approximately $111,700 for installation of about one third of what Woods termed "the apparatus, you know, ramps and pipes and things," for a total of roughly $164,700.

Phases two and three, Woods said, are each expected to cost approximately $111,000, with the town kicking in whatever GOCO grants or other funding sources do not cover.

"There's quite a few kids who use it," Woods said of the skateboard park, recalling that she's seen as many as 20-30 youngsters using the park at one time.

"I've even seen kids sweeping off a light snow to use it," she remarked.

In other action the town Board of Trustees:

• Approved an ordinance amending the town codes dealing with commercial site plans in the B-1, B-2 and B-3 commercial zone districts.

• Unanimously agreed to repeal those parts of the town code dealing with the old West Care Ambulance Service, which was absorbed into the Burning Mountains Fire Protection District in June 2010.

The next regular town board meeting will be on Feb. 25.">class="NormalParagraphStyle">
