Prep Sports Roundup: Zang, Ruelas set pace for Rifle wrestlers at regional

MONTROSE, Colorado - Coy Zang and Oscar Ruelas each managed a pair of third-place finishes to pace the performances of Rifle High School's wrestling team on the final day of the Class 4A Region 4 Tournament on Saturday.

Zang earned a 14-8 decision over Pueblo Centennial's James Engle at 132 pounds, moving his record this season to 41-10. Ruelas needed all of 20 seconds to pin Centennial's Darian Manzanares to win the third-place match at 120.

The Bears will send four wrestlers to the Class 4A State Championships at the Pepsi Center in Denver this week, including Isaac Rider at 126 and Dallas Rohrig at 138. Justin Barham of Glenwood Springs, who came into the tournament as the top seed at 170 pounds, finished fourth.

Barham pinned his first two opponents before falling to Thompson Valley's Josh McLaughlin, 2-0, in the tournament semifinals. A 5-3 setback to Falcon's Justin Barron, who came into the tournament seeded second, followed in the third-place match.

Rider lost a 4-3 decision to Delta's Shane Anderson in the third-place match at 126. Rohrig also lost a close decision at 138 pounds, falling 2-0 to Thompson Valley's Parker Simington to finish fourth.

Thompson Valley took the team title with 231 points, followed by Centennial (176) and Palisade (164.5). Rifle finished 10th in the team standings with 93 points.

RIFLE, Colorado - Rifle High School's boys basketball team won its seventh consecutive Class 4A Western Slope League game and eighth straight game overall, defeating Battle Mountain 57-28 on Saturday.

The Bears finished the regular season 11-8 overall and 8-6 in the WSL after a 1-6 start in league play.

RIFLE, Colorado - Chante Church scored a game-high 20 points and Joey Kuheim added 12 and five rebounds for Rifle, which shut out Battle Mountain in the second quarter on its way to a 56-23 league victory in the Bears' regular-season finale.

Annie Schmide added six for Rifle, which held a 50-11 lead after three quarters. The Bears finished the season at 13-6 overall and 11-3 in league play, good for second place in the standings behind league-champion Delta.
