Demon boys open 4A tourney at Delta

The Glenwood Springs High School boys basketball team drew the 11th and final seed in the 4A District 8 tournament this week, and will be at Delta tonight for a first-round play-in game.

Glenwood finished the regular season at 5-14 overall and 4-10 in the 4A Western Slope League, just ahead of 3-11 Summit in the eight-team league.

With the addition of Southwest League teams Durango, Montezuma-Cortez and Montrose for the district tournament, Glenwood dropped to the 11th seed.

The Demons will hit the road for a 7 p.m. game at No. 6 Delta. The Panthers finished third in the WSL standings at 9-5 and 11-8 overall.

"We had a good practice today, and will go out and give it everything we've got," Demons coach Cory Hitchcock said.

If the Demons can pull off the win, they would face No. 3 Eagle Valley Thursday night at Grand Junction Central High School.

Other play-in games tonight have Summit at Montrose, and Battle Mountain versus Cortez at Palisade High School.

Durango enters the 4A boys tournament as the top seed, followed by WSL champ Palisade, Eagle Valley, Rifle and Steamboat Springs.

The Rifle Bears (11-8, 8-6)) take their eight-game winning streak into a Thursday match-up with Steamboat.

Meanwhile, the Glenwood Springs girls earned the No. 5 seed in the district tournament. The Demons (12-6, 8-6) face No. 4 Durango at 3 p.m. Thursday at Grand Junction Central High School.

The Rifle girls (13-6, 11-3) go in as the No. 3 seed, and will learn their Thursday opponent after tonight's play-in games.

Earning the top seed for the 4A girls at the district tournament is Montrose, followed by Delta, Rifle, Durango and Glenwood Springs.

After tonight's play-in games, the district tournament will continue Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Central High and at Colorado Mesa University.
