LETTER: Hoffman dashed my hopes

I had high hopes, for a moment, that Jim Hoffman in his Feb. 15 discourse on avoiding gun confiscation was going to provide a simple, working legal definition of "assault rifle," inasmuch as he used this term and such a definition has been sorely lacking in all the recent angst-ridden palaver about "gun control," jibber-jabber which, incidentally, leaves aside for another day the truly critical matter of treatment and control of mentally and psychologically disturbed gun users. All we know about "assault" rifles is that they are "scary-looking."

The cause of death by gun is the trigger puller. That being indisputably the case, perhaps spending so much time and effort in crafting ways and means to impose restrictions on the rights and privileges of millions of peaceable, law-abiding citizens is not likely to be productive, in a rational sense.
