Pfau falls in 3A wrestling quarterfinals

DENVER, Colorado - Grand Valley High School wrestler Cody Pfau's bid to become the first female state wrestling champion ended in a 3A quarterfinal loss this morning at the Denver Pepsi Center.

Meanwhile, Grand Valley's Bryan Hegwood won his 170-pound quarterfinal match to become the only area wrestler to advance to the semifinal round.

Pfau lost her 106-pound match against the top seed, Tel Kelley of Alamosa, in a 17-2 technical fall decision.

But the Grand Valley senior's hopes remain alive for a top-five finish at the 3A state wrestling meet. She wrestles in the consolation bracket this afternoon against Ryan Francis, a freshman from The Classical Academy.

Pfau still has a shot at third place, entering this afternoon's match at 29-9. Francis comes in with a 16-14 record, after falling in the first round on Thursday in a 10-4 decision to Diondre Garcia of Monte Vista.

Pfau became the first female in state wrestling history to win a first-round match on Thursday, with a 6-5 victory over Ferdinando Martinez of Fort Lupton.

Hegwood pinned Centauri sophomore Jensen Hamilton in 5 minutes, 23 seconds. He will face Caleb Colton of Bennet in the semifinals.

Also dropping their quarterfinal matches this morning and moving on to the consolation bracket in the 3A meet were Grand Valley's Michael Salzar at 160 pounds, George Stagg at 145 pounds and 138-pounder Tucker Schultz.

Class 4A wrestlers Oscar Ruelas, Issac Rider and Coy Zang of Rifle, and Justin Barham of Glenwood Springs, also wrestle today in the consolation round.

The state wrestling tournament continues today and Saturday at the Pepsi Center.
