Garfield County Sheriff's Report

Editor's note: The Garfield County Sheriff's Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Thin horses: At 1:19 p.m. on Feb. 14, deputies responded to a call concerning thin horses in the Parachute area. The owners were contacted and given information and other resources to assist them in caring for their livestock, and the sheriff's office will check the horses periodically this month to see if conditions have improved.

Pit bull at large: At 12:21 p.m. on Feb. 16, the animal control officer impounded a pit bull running at large in the Battlement Mesa area. The dog was a black and white male, with no tags or collar, and was taken to the Divide Creek Animal Hospital to be housed.

Fire assistance: At 2:57 p.m. on Feb. 16, deputies assisted the Glenwood Springs Fire Department with a structure fire at an undisclosed location near town.

Interstate pursuit: At 2:15 a.m. on Feb. 17, deputies were called out to assist the Glenwood Springs Police Department in pursuit of a suspect on I-70.

Underage drinking: At 10:08 p.m. on Dec. 14, deputies were advised of a disturbance at mile marker 6.75 on Highway 82 south of Glenwood Springs. A 17-year old girl was issued a summons into court for underage possession or consumption of alcohol.

No license plates: At 2:03 p.m. on Feb. 15, deputies stopped a vehicle on U.S. Highway 6 outside of Rifle for lack of license plates, and issued a summons into court to Cesar Namir Baca, 20, on charges of having no plates on his vehicle, failure to provide proof of insurance, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia

Pot possession: At 8:32 p.m. on Feb. 15, deputies were advised of a drug violation outside of New Castle along U.S. Highway 6. Jordan L. Burris, 18, was issued a summons into court for possession of marijuana (two ounces or less), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Speeding: At 4:37 a.m. on Feb. 16, deputies stopped a vehicle outside of Silt on County Road 331 (Dry Hollow Road) for speeding, and issued a ticket to Brian D. Wells, 39, of Grand Junction on charges of speeding, failure to provide proof of insurance and use of stolen or fictitious license plates.

Dog bite: At 4:11 p.m. on Feb. 16, animal control responded to a call concerning a dog bite. The dog was quarantined, and Michelle M. Payne was issued a summons into court on charges of having a vicious animal and allowing it to run at large. The victim was treated at home for the injury.

Suspicious parties: At 4:26 a.m. on Feb. 17, deputies were advised of "several suspicious parties" on U.S. Highway 6 outside of Rifle. After an investigation, Eduardo Gesues Cabrales-Galloardo,18, of Parachute was issued a summons into court for underage drinking and released.

Traffic stop: At 10:52 a.m. on Feb. 14, deputies stopped a vehicle on Grand Avenue in Glenwood Springs, for an undisclosed reason. They arrested Alexandro Nevarez Contreras, 25, of Parachute, for driving while his license was suspended, and failure to provide proof of insurance, and took him to the Garfield County Jail.

Failure to appear: At 5:55 p.m. on Feb. 15 deputies were called to an incident in the Parachute area. After an investigation, they arrested and jailed John C. Collmer, Jr., of Lebanon, Tennessee, on a failure to appear warrant issued by the Glenwood Springs municipal court.

Restraining order violation: At 1:13 a.m. on Feb. 16, deputies contacted a man along U.S. Highway 6 outside of Rifle. After investigation, they arrested and jailed Jeremy M. Brownson, 42, of Rifle, on charges of violating a restraining order.

Explosives charge: At 8:28 a.m. on Feb. 16, deputies assisted the Parachute Police Department on a call to 24 E. Carson Circle in Parachute. Justin Matthew Romero, 21, of Parachute was arrested and jailed on charges of criminal mischief and domestic violence.

Theft: At 5:20 p.m. on Feb. 16, deputies responded to a theft report at mile marker 103 on U.S. Highway 6. They arrested and jailed Jose F. Hernandez-Alvarado, 39, Silt, on charges of speeding, criminal trespass, and theft.
