In the Feb. 21 PI, our venerable liberal columnist Hal Sundin, in his article titled "The US Constitution, a Study in Compromise," said, "The Constitution was by no means popular when it was presented to the States for ratification, largely because it lacked any provision for protecting people from tyranny by their own government, which was the issue over which the Revolution had been fought."Au contraire mon frre, I believe you forgot the Second Amendment. "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."In fact, it seems most of our liberal friends in government have forgotten what that means. Take the Obama/Feinstein legislative assault on defensive weapons introduced in Washington in late January.Feinstein reiterated that her objective is to remove all guns from circulation. Their approach is to brainwash people into thinking guns are only for hunting and sport shooting and thereby diverting attention from why the Founders codified the right to bear arms, which was to support and defend the Constitution and the liberty it enshrines. The Democrat-controlled Colorado House of Representatives just passed a strict gun-control measure that will do nothing to curb gun violence, but is just another example of more control over our lives and further empowers an intrusive government. HB13-1224 is just another nail in the coffin of our freedom.Universal background checks will be required if you wish to sell a gun to your neighbor for example. Exactly how this stops a criminal from getting a gun is unclear. Contact your representatives and let them know you will not sit by and allow them to destroy your freedom to own a firearm. So, Mr. Sundin, be assured there is no compromise concerning the Second Amendment."A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." - George WashingtonBob AndersonGlenwood Springs

Originally addressed Dear Mr. Kubeczko, Colorado Oil & Gas Commission,Thank you for honoring our deepest concerns for protecting our pristine wilderness in the Thompson Divide area as well as the clean water supply for our rivers, fish, ranchers, food growers, wildlife and the thriving community that depends on the preservation of our wild lands and the vitality of our valley. Our community is very supportive of maintaining the quality of life that we have worked hard to grow and develop for generations to come. Please hear the voices of those of us who depend on our environment for our economic well-being. As a resident of the Roaring Fork Valley for more than 40 years, I have lived through boom and bust types of economy in oil and gas exploration as well as coal production in this valley and in the Western Slope. The temporary gain does not outweigh the long-term issues and sacrifices.Thank you for preserving our limited resources.Lisa Dancing-LightCarbondale
