Powderhorn's Western Weekend hosts costumes, races, fun in the sun

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Yeeeeehaw! There's lots happening at Powderhorn Western Weekend, March 9-10. Music, costumes and trivia. Plus, racing is scheduled, too - the USAA Rocky Mountain Division U12/U10 Championships is set for both Saturday and Sunday. "The top USSA ski racers in the Rocky Mountain Division will compete at Powderhorn on Saturday, March 9, in a Giant Slalom competition (two races) on Bill's Run," the official Powderhorn website said. On Sunday, "the top USSA ski racers in the Rocky Mountain Division will compete at Powderhorn ... in a Slalom competition (two races) on Wonderbump," the website continued. "There will also be a 'Skills Quest' on Lower Greenhorn."Saturday's race is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday's event starts at 9 a.m.Western-themed costumes, including cowboy hats, are encouraged this weekend as part of an annual tradition, Powderhorn Spokeswoman Gabrielle Michna said. Awards will be given for the best outfits.Live music with the Goodman Brothers on the Sunset Deck starts at 3 p.m. Saturday. A "Quick Draw Showdown" trivia contest at 4 p.m. will "test everyone's knowledge on the runs of Powderhorn," Michna noted."The costume contest is all weekend, but we usually do all of our prizes and giveaways Saturday during the music, which is presented by the Goodman Band!" she added.
