Walters wins gold for Rifle at Delta golf tournament

DELTA, Colorado - Taylor Walters finished Wednesday's girls golf tournament in the same place she finished last year's regional tournament: on top.

The Rifle High School senior carded a 1-over 73 at Devil's Thumb Golf Course, netting a two-stroke victory and medalist honors during the season opener for the Bears.

"This was her first tournament of the year, and it was a great, great way for her to start the season," Rifle coach Britt Choate said.

Walters netted four bogies and three birdies on the course, making par on the rest of them. She also birdied the par-3 18th hole to finish her round on top, beating Kala Kaltz of Montrose (3-over 75) for first place.

The Bears' only other competitor on the course was Alyx Carter, who netted a pair of birdies during her round and finished with a score of 89.

Walters will be going for a fourth consecutive trip to a state golf tournament. She won the individual title at the Class 3A regional championship last season, helping the Bears earn their first trip to a state tournament as a team since 2008.

Rifle will have a full team when it plays in a league meet at Black Canyon Golf Club in Montrose at 10 a.m. today.
