Garfield County Sheriff's Report

Editor's note: The Garfield County Sheriff's Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Two cats caught: At 7:01 a.m. on March 4, deputies with Animal Control picked up two black-and-white cats in the Battlement Mesa area and ferried them to the Colorado Animal Rescue Shelter.

Vandalism: At 7:29 a.m. on March 4, deputies contacted Jacob Eli Rodriguez, 20, on U.S. Highway 6 near Rifle regarding an undisclosed incident. After investigating, he was arrested and jailed on charges of criminal mischief, failure to comply with a court order and domestic violence.

Sexual assault, no charges: At 4:25 p.m. on March 5, deputies responded to a reported sexual assault near Carbondale. The victim did not wish to make a formal report, and the case is inactive.

Tickets for pot: At 23 minutes past midnight on March 6, deputies made a traffic stop in Battlement Mesa. After investigating, they ticketed Jason Dale Shaver Jr., 19, of Parachute with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than 2 ounces of pot and not having a working license plate light. Also ticketed was Alexander Wyscaver-Hartsell, 19, or Parachute, for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Speeding, DUI: At 10:09 p.m. on March 5, deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 13 north of Rifle. After investigating, they arrested Craig L. Vardaman, 46, of Silt, and jailed him on charges of speeding, driving while drunk or on drugs, and having an open container of booze in the car.

Harassment and theft: At 12:07 p.m. on March 6, deputies responded to a call about harassment in the Parachute area. After investigating, they arrested Joseph Ramon Valdez, 21, of Parachute, and jailed him on a charge of theft by receiving, as outlined in an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Speeding, DUI: At 1:13 a.m. on March 8, deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding outside of Glenwood Springs. After investigating, they arrested Michael Szmaida, 26, of Vail, and jailed him on charges of speeding and driving while drunk or on drugs.

Abduction and menacing: At 11:46 a.m. on March 8, deputies responded to a report of a disturbance on County Road 119 (Kindall Road) outside of Glenwood Springs. After investigating, they arrested and jailed Desmond K. Harris, 57, of Glenwood Springs, on charges of false imprisonment, trespassing and menacing.

License under restraint: At 1:47 a.m. on March 9, deputies stopped a vehicle on U.S. Highway 6 outside of New Castle and, after an investigation, arrested and jailed Stacy Sue Record-Solinger, 44, of New Castle, on charges of driving while her license was under restraint for a previous offense.

Looking suspicious: At 1:56 a.m. on March 9, deputies spotted a "suspicious vehicle" parked at a nature trail along County Road 100 (Catherine Store Road) outside of Carbondale, and stopped to investigate. Oscar Alvarado was subsequently arrested and jailed on a warrant for failing to appear in court and failing to comply with court orders.

Another suspicious situation: At 5 a.m. on March 9, deputies responded to a "suspicious call" on Panoramic Drive outside of Silt. After investigating, they arrested and jailed Michael A. Newton, 43, of Silt, on charges of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, reckless endangerment, and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Driving an unsafe vehicle: At 13 minutes past midnight on March 10, deputies stopped a vehicle on State Highway 13 north of Rifle. After investigating, they arrested and jailed Victor Garcia Gutierrez, 29, of Carbondale, on charges of driving a defective or unsafe vehicle, failure to provide proof of insurance, and for failing to appear in court.

Speeding, etc.: At 3:12 a.m. on March 10, deputies stopped a vehicle on Highway 82 south of Glenwood Springs. After investigating, they arrested and jailed Jesus Velazquez-Cuevas, 29, of Carbondale, on charges of speeding, driving without a valid license and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Warrant arrest: At 3:43 p.m. on March 10, deputies contacted Glenna Mae Browning, 35, of Glenwood Springs, at a location on Mountain Shadows Drive. After investigating, they arrested and jailed Browning and active warrant concerning charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, assault and child abuse.
