Palisade hosts first-ever bike rodeo

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Kids love cruising around on their bikes, especially during their summer months of freedom from school. And to promote cycling safety, Palisade's Bike Rodeo is set for Saturday, April 6. It will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Palisade Community Center."We are partnering with Grand Valley Bikes, as well as the R-5 service learning program," said Sarah Brooks, Palisade's recreation and events coordinator.Brooks added that the R-5 program is made up of high school students learning about bike mechanics at school."It's an elective class with a small bike shop," she noted.According to a news release, the Bike Rodeo will feature "bike safety checks, rules of the road, bike obstacle course, prizes, basic tune-up demos for adults and teens. There are a limited number of bikes and helmets for the event so you are encouraged to bring your own bike and helmet."Registration for bike checks starts at 9:45 a.m., and rules of the road will be taught at 10:30."There are a lot of kids that ride their bikes, and they don't always pay attention to traffic and safety," Brooks said. "The main goal is to educate kids and parents on bike safety so they're safer in the summer when they're out riding their bikes all around town."
