Crime Report

Editor's note: The Rifle Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff's Office reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Accidents lead to arrest: Police responded to the 200 block of West Second Street to investigate an accident on April 5 at 1:39 a.m. A vehicle with extensive damage was found, but no one was present. During the investigation, police received another report of a hit and run accident in the 100 block of West Third Street. Investigation indicated the same vehicle was involved in that accident as well. Officers later located the suspected driver, Michael Jacob Latil, 21, of Silt. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, careless driving, no proof of insurance, failure to notify police of an accident and leaving the scene of an accident.

Vicious animal: On April 5 at 11:30 a.m., police received a report of a dog that was running at large and had attacked two other dogs, which were being walked on leashes. The dog's owner, Danny Ashley, of Rifle, was issued a summons for having a vicious animal.

Underage drinking: On April 5 at 11:30 p.m., police learned of an underage party in the 400 block of White River Avenue. Alyssa Ashlee Duran, 18, of New Castle; Matthew Kai Steinwinder, 18, of Rifle; Jordan Layne Burris, 18, of Rifle; and Alexis Mae Manuppella, 18, of Rifle, were issued summonses for minor in possession of alcohol and released.

Dog at large: Animal control responded to a call of three dogs fighting on County Road 218 outside Silt on April 6 at 2:06 p.m. One dog, a white female boxer, was taken to a local vet clinic due to extensive injuries. Another dog was not injured and the third dog was also taken to a vet. The owner of one of the dogs, Darren Michael Menu, 29, of Silt, was issued a summons for allowing the dog to run at large.

Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a vehicle for traffic violations at milemarker 90 on I-70 near Rifle on April 6 at 6:26 a.m. After investigation, Jordan Demers, 32, of Grand Junction, was arrested on an active warrant and for suspicion of driving while his license was revoked, failure to stop at a stop sign and careless driving. He was taken to jail.

DUI: An officer contacted a vehicle for a traffic infraction in the 100 block of East 18th Street on April 6 at 9:57 p.m. The driver, Megan Diann Cook, 25, of Craig, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and later released with a summons.

Dog at large: Deputies responded to an animal complaint in the 300 block of Black Hawk Trail in Battlement Mesa on April 7 at 6:38 p.m. The dog's owner, Ernestine Largo, 37, was issued a summons for having a vicious animal and allowing the dog to run at large.

Pot violations: A deputy contacted a suspicious vehicle on Smokey Hills Court in Battlement Mesa on April 7 at 10:35 p.m. After investigation, Patrick Avila, 19, of Parachute, was issued summonses for driving without a valid license and possession of drug paraphernalia. A 17-year-old juvenile passenger was also issued summonses for possession of less than two ounces of suspected marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

DUI: Deputies conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 6 outside Rifle on April 7 at 1:33 a.m. After investigation, the driver, Oscar Nunez Marquez, 37, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, with expired license plates and an open container of alcohol and failure to prove he had auto insurance. A passenger, Elmer J. Soto-Varela, 29, of Rifle, was also arrested on suspicion of having an open container of alcohol. They were taken to jail.

ID theft: Deputies took an identity theft report outside Rifle on April 8 at 7:37 a.m. The case is under investigation.

DUI: Deputies conducted a traffic stop on East First Street in Parachute on April 8 at 10:40 p.m. After investigation, the driver, Carrie Ann Kalaher, 41, of Parachute, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, failure to drive in a single lane and while her license was revoked. She was taken to jail.

Illegal plates and weapon: Police stopped to help a motorist with a disabled vehicle near Colorado Highway 13 and White River Avenue on April 8 at 11:48 a.m. and found the license plates of the vehicle were stolen. The driver, Travis Ryan McCain, 23, was also allegedly found to be in possession of an illegal weapon and was arrested for an active warrant.

Assault: On April 8 at 4:44 p.m., a juvenile girl reported that she had been assaulted by a friend in the 1000 block of West Fifth Street. Following investigation, Preston Scott Goodnight, 22, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of harassment, third degree assault and false imprisonment.

Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a man on Morning Star Drive in Battlement Mesa on April 9 at 4:02 p.m. After investigation, Richard Allen Walls, 42, of Parachute, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.

Theft: Officers received a report of theft in the 2100 block of White River Avenue on April 9 at 9:20 a.m. A piece of equipment was rented and several months later had not been returned. The case is under investigation.

Warrant arrest: Ashley Maline Paulsen, 22, of Rifle, turned herself in on April 9 at 3:22 p.m. on an outstanding warrant. She was arrested, posted bond and was released.

Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a woman with a warrant in the 500 block of North Sixth Street in Silt on April 11 at 5:25 p.m. After investigation, Eliza Ann Marie Duran, 34, of Silt, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.

Drug arrest: Deputies conducted a traffic stop on I-70 outside Silt on April 12 at 6:51 p.m. After investigation, the driver, Arturo Loya-Martinez, 43, of Carbondale, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, failure to provide proof of insurance, possession of suspected cocaine with the intent to sell it, failing to drive in a single lane, driving without a valid license, and obstructing a police officer. He was taken to jail.

Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a man on County Road 346 outside Rifle on April 12 at 6:53 p.m. for a traffic violation. After investigation, Andrew Matlock Holt, 41, of Carbondale, was arrested on an active warrant and taken to jail.

Domestic violence: Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance on County Road 241 outside New Castle on April 12 at 10:07 p.m. After investigation, Aaron Matthew Koch, 39, of New Castle, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, obstruction of phone services, harassment and on an active warrant. Melissa Catherine Smith-Ortiz, 37, of New Castle, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and violation of a restraining order. They were both taken to jail.

Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 6 outside Silt on April 14 at 1:30 p.m. After investigation, Ronald Carl, 38, of Rifle, was arrested on a warrant and taken to jail.

Warrant arrest: Deputies conducted a traffic stop on I-70 near Glenwood Springs on April 14 at 11:06 p.m. After investigation, Gabriela Gutierrez, 24, of Rifle, was arrested on an active warrant on suspicion of driving an unsafe vehicle and violating restrictions on a temporary instruction permit. She was taken to jail.

Sex assault: On April 15 at 9:41 a.m., deputies received a report of a sex assault in the Silt area. This case is open and under investigation.

Burglary: Deputies responded to a burglary on U.S. Highway 6 east of Rifle on April 15 at 4:48 p.m. After investigation, a 17-year-old juvenile from Rifle was issued a summons for criminal trespass, theft and burglary and released.

Domestic violence: Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance on Aspen Way in Battlement Mesa on April 15 at 6:23 a.m. After investigation, James Anderson, 49, of Parachute, was arrested on suspicion of harassment, third degree assault and domestic violence. He was taken to jail.
