SILT — If all goes well, the first phase of a new upscale RV park in Silt may be open for business in June.
Currently being called “Camp Colorado River,” the project has been under construction since mid-January and is expected to take about five years until final buildout, according to Ray Nielsen, owner, architect and designer of Camp Colorado River LLC.
“It’s going to be a KOA [Kampgrounds of America] campground and the first phase will be 67 RV spaces and four cabin units on eight and a half acres,” Nielsen said.
The first phase also includes construction of a two-story main building with restrooms and showers.
Ultimately, the total 56 acres will include 160-170 cabins and RV spaces with a pool, gift shop and a convenience store.
The location of the property, north of the Colorado River and south of Interstate 70, was the main reason the company chose Silt to locate Camp Colorado River.
“The river was key for us,” Nielsen said. “I think we can embrace the river. We’d like to have some rafting and kayaking and water sports. We also own an island in the river and we want to put a zipline in there.”
While the site offers a view and close proximity to the river, it also offers good access from the interstate.
The RV park is geared toward short-term stays, but Nielsen said he hopes visitors will decide to extend their stay when they enjoy the amenities.
“We want to attract them here and then give them a reason to stay here for a week,” Nielsen said. “This is a good place to set up a base camp and then take advantage of all the [recreational] opportunities in this area.”
Long-term stays of more than 30 consecutive days in a single space or permanent residential occupancy are not allowed.
The town has granted the company a building permit, but there is still a lot of work to be done with utilities and infrastructure.
Completion of the entire park will depend on the market over the next five years.
“It’s kind of ‘if you build it, they will come’ mentality,” Nielsen said. “Total buildout will depend on the market and filling up spaces.”
But he is hopeful that people will be attracted to the upscale KOA park.
“This park is unique,” Nielsen said. “There’s nothing else like it around here.”
