Preliminary results for Carbondale election: Byars, Hobbs, Merriott

The preliminary results are in for the Carbondale Trustee election. With four candidates vying for three seats, presumed victors are Katrina Byars with 649 votes, Alexander Hobbs with 591, Frosty Merriott with 545. Wayne Horak’s 482 leaves him as the odd man out unless official results differ from those released by Garfield County on Tuesday evening.

Incumbent Mayor Stacey Bernot was re-elected with 772 votes in an uncontested race.

Byars and Hobbs quietly celebrated their victory at Phat Thai in Carbondale with the eatery’s monthly “Phat Figures” social drawing event. Both candidates ran nontraditional campaigns.

Hobbs eschewed yard signs and went door to door in neighborhoods with upcoming issues.

“I’m sick of the way politics are so focused on the elections as opposed to involvement in the community,” he said. “I chose to run a campaign where I reached out and participated as opposed to promoting myself.”

Byars planned on having signs made up but never got around to it. Instead, she spent her time cooking lunch for folks at senior housing and similar outreach efforts.

“I really love Carbondale, and they give a lot of love back,” she said after the preliminary results were released. “If the final results come in and I have the chance to be a leader in my town, I’d be really committed to doing what’s best for Carbondale.”

Asked about recent developments on the Thompson Divide, preservation of which was a significant part of her platform, Byars was succinct. “The leases should have expired,” she said.

Horak was graceful in presumed defeat.

“I’d like to thank Carbondale for voting for me,” he said, “and I hope that the new trustees will vote to make Carbondale a more unified town.”

Merriott, the sole incumbent trustee in the race, declined to comment until the final results are in.
