Aspen Mountain gets two extra weekends of skiing

Lift-served skiing at Aspen Mountain won’t end on April 20 after all.

Aspen Mountain will extend the season and re-open for the weekends of April 26-27 and May 3-4, Aspen Skiing Co. announced via social media Thursday.

“We’ll open as much terrain as conditions allow top to bottom, east and west sides,” Skico announced via its Twitter account, adding that its hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax Express, FIS and Ruthie’s chairlifts will be in play. The Sundeck will be open, too.

Season passes from 2013-14 will be honored. Discounted extension days will be sold at a discounted price for one-day, two-day and Classic passholders. Lift ticket prices haven’t been determined yet. “What we do know, it’s going to be awesome,” Skico said via Twitter.

The Tweet was headlined, “The Rumors Are True — We’re Extending Our Season.”

“We figured since we opened early we might as well stay open late,” said Rich Burkley, vice president of mountain operations, in a news release. “Conditions are just too good not to go skiing.”

The ski areas have been graced with above average snowfall throughout the winter. It’s been powderhound heaven. There have been 24 days with four or more inches of fresh snow and 12 days with at least six inches of new snow, according to Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle. Aspen Highlands has topped 300 inches of snow for the season and Snowmass is on the cusp of exceeding that mark, Hanle said. Aspen Mountain had about 290 inches of snowfall this season going into Thursday, he said.

The other three Skico ski areas will close as scheduled. Buttermilk closes Sunday. Aspen Highlands closes Sunday, April 13. Snowmass closes Sunday, April 20. Aspen Mountain was scheduled to close that day. It will still close for Monday through Friday before reopening for the two extended season weekends.
