More magazines available digitally from the libraries

On May 1, the Garfield County Libraries will be joining a larger group subscription to digital magazines through Zinio. Zinio is a service libraries can subscribe to that provides digital access to magazines. You can check out digital copies of your favorite magazines and then download them to your computer or Apple, Android or Windows 8 device. You don’t need to visit a library location to check out these magazines. You can check them out straight from your device. And each magazine is available to everyone who wants it, so there is no need to wait until someone returns their copy. All you need to get started is a library card in good standing. Zinio has titles for people with a variety of interests from backpacking to knitting, from fashion to photography.

The Garfield County Libraries’ Technology Trainer, Stephen Tafoya, says he likes Zinio because it’s, “Free magazines everywhere I go!” Christy Nilsson, youth services assistant in New Castle, says, “I like being able to look at lots of different magazines without wondering what I will do with them later!”

For the last year, our library card holders have enjoyed 25 magazine titles, to which 25 more titles were added in November. Meanwhile, libraries in the Marmot Library Network joined together to make a cooperative purchasing agreement with Zinio to get more titles for a lower cost for each member. Upon our renewal of our Zinio subscription this May, we decided to join this group to offer our customers more options. As of May 1, you will have more than 110 titles to choose from. We will have titles in English and Spanish, and titles for adults and teens. Jordan Fields, digital services librarian, states, “Joining forces with other Marmot libraries allows us to offer a broader range of Zinio titles for less money. This was really a no-brainer for us and a big win for library members.” The Friends of the Library at each branch in the district have chipped in $100 each to help offset the cost of this product.

In order to take advantage of this new opportunity, you will need to create a new Zinio account, even if you already have Zinio set up. You can find instructions at our website, www.gcpld.org. Please contact your local library if you have any questions.
