May snow forces Bike Week festivities indoors

A drizzle turned to snow in the early hours Monday in Carbondale.

Public Works Director Larry Ballenger measured 5 inches before he headed in to work to begin directing the cleanup. “It was heavy, wet, stuff,” he said. It stuck to new leaves and flowers on trees and weighed them down. Many trees lost branches, and one Siberian elm will likely need to be removed entirely. Power lines, ditches and other municipal utilities were unaffected.

“This is just what late spring snows bring,” Ballenger said.

Monday was also the first day of Bonedale Bike Week, although the weather prompted some changes. The folks handing out free coffee to bicyclists on the corner of Fourth and Main braved the snow, but other events were shifted inside even as snow began to melt. The kids’ bike rodeo was moved into the Rec Center gymnasium, while the “bike in” movie ended up in the Third Street Center’s Round Room.

The forecast for the rest of the week is mixed, but looks more conducive to outdoor activities.
