How did your business start?
After working four years in a barber shop in Carbondale, I decided I wanted to have a shop of my own where I could implement my philosophy of quality work, how to treat my customers in a professional manner and build a business based on integrity, in every respect. So, in 1999 I opened Floyd’s of Mayberry Barber Shop on Main Street in Carbondale, which turned into a most successful operation.
Being raised in Glenwood Springs, living here virtually all my life, my ultimate goal was to bring Floyd’s to Glenwood.
A dream opportunity materialized in a lovely house at 1316 Grand Ave., where we have a long-term lease and intend to be for many years to come.
What do you sell?
We do men’s haircuts, walk-ins only, at $19. In our salon, which is completely separated from the barber shop, we do women’s cuts, color and highlighting, by appointment only.
We are also known for being a clean, sanitized shop and salon, offering an enjoyable, fun ambiance.
What positive lessons did you learn during the recession?
The vast majority of our customers kept coming back, indicating that our pricing is reasonably set for the area. We work off of volume and high quality instead of high prices.
What strategy do you use to hire good people?
We are all independent contractors.
Collectively the three of us have 83 years of experience in the trade. The owner, Pat, has been cutting men’s hair for 23 years; her sister Connie Bolin-Gilstrap, who does men and women, has 33 years; and Julie Dodo, concentrating on men’s cuts but also does women, has been in it for 27 years.
Potential additions to our trio would have to have longtime experience, be well-established in the business, and be a true professional with proven integrity.
What is your strategy for growth in the new year?
When we told our customers in the Carbondale location that we are moving to Glenwood, we were pleased to learn, and pleasantly surprised, that about 50 percent of them actually live in Glenwood. This gives us a good base, but we will obviously work on expanding our customer base here. A lot of our business comes from word of mouth from satisfied customers.
With our location on Grand Avenue we also expect drive by new customers from up and down the valley.
We want to be an active member of the community; we immediately joined the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce.
What is the best thing of running a business here?
Number one is our customers, we have so much fun with them, most have a great sense of humor and make our days at work not seem like work at all. It seems to be a special kind of positive character among the people who live here in the valley, certainly one of the best places in the world to be, and we are so happy to be a part of that.
