Two city of Glenwood Springs operations, the electric and broadband departments, will have a new home on property recently acquired by the city along Devereux Road, just east of the Whitewater Rafting Co. facility.
City Council on May 15 approved plans for two structures on the 3-acre site at 1660 Devereux Road. A 12,837-square-foot building will house the city electric department, while broadband operations will take up a separate 4,747-square-foot facility.
The two city departments are currently located in the Glenwood Springs Municipal Operations Center on Wulfsohn Road.
To avoid similar problems that have surfaced at that 12-year-old facility, which recently required a $2.5 million fix related to settling of unstable soils, council agreed to build a deep foundation under the new buildings.
“We need to make sure we don’t get back into that same situation, so that 10 years from now the City Council doesn’t have an unexpected gift,” Councilman Ted Edmonds said. “Let’s do the right thing, even if it costs us a little bit more.”
It turns out the deeper foundation won’t cost more, though, engineers advised.
