Man arrested after gun fired at West Glenwood Dairy Queen

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Two men were detained for questioning after a shot was fired during an altercation among four young men in a parking lot just outside the entrance to the West Glenwood Dairy Queen on midafternoon Tuesday, police said.

Mario Ruiz Alvarado, 21, of Glenwood, was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment, prohibited use of a weapon by a felon out on probation, conspiracy, theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A 17-year-old male who was present for the incident was also in custody but had not been charged as of Tuesday night.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m., Police Chief Terry Wilson said.

“There was apparently some type of conflict between them, and one of the males allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired a shot,” said Wilson. “After that it was suddenly over and everyone decided to leave the area.”

One of the suspects in custody had a cut on his hand from the scuffle, Wilson said, but no one was injured in the shooting itself.

The restaurant was open at the time, and there were several witnesses to the incident. A search of the area brought out a K-9 unit and a ladder truck to access the building’s roof. Police found a weapon after an extensive search but have not located the projectile, which was reportedly fired into the air. According to Wilson, the gun had been reported stolen.

Two other suspects were still at large as of press time. Wilson said he did not believe the men pose a threat to the community.
