Suspect in custody following Dotsero-area knife incident

DOTSERO — Police said Wednesday they had a man in custody in connection with a knifing incident that occurred the day before at a campsite about 15 miles up Coffee Pot Springs Road in remote Garfield County.

According to Garfield County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Walt Stowe, the female victim, who received cuts from the knife but was not stabbed, provided a name and description of the suspect.

A person answering to that description turned himself in to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office at 5 a.m. Wednesday and was transferred to Garfield County custody later that morning, Stowe said.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified by police, and the woman reportedly got into an altercation at their campsite around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

According to initial reports the woman was cut twice with a knife during the altercation. The male suspect then fled from the area in a vehicle and headed down the Coffee Pot Springs Road. The vehicle was later discovered wrecked and abandoned alongside the road, Stowe said in a news release.

Meanwhile, the victim was transported to Valley View Hospital via ambulance and was treated for “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Deputies from both Eagle County and Garfield County responded to the area, since the incident occurred near the county line. The Colorado State Patrol also assisted in the initial search for the suspect, and investigators from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office arrived later to collect evidence.

Stowe also confirmed that the incident happened in Garfield County on Bureau of Land Management land, and not in a developed campground.

“A reverse 911 call went out Tuesday evening to alert local residences and advise them to secure their homes and be aware of strangers passing by or trying to gain access to their home,” he said in the release.
