Flood warning issued for Crystal Valley

REDSTONE — The National Weather Service in Grand Junction issued a flash flood warning for the Crystal River Valley area, including Redstone, Marble, Carbondale and surrounding areas, until 8:45 p.m. tonight.

The warning included areas of northwestern Gunnison County, northwestern Pitkin County, southeastern Garfield County and northeastern Mesa County.

“Local law enforcement reported thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area,” according to a NWS alert. “Excessive rainfall over the warned area has already caused mudslides north of Redstone on Highway 133.”

Colorado Department of Transportation crews were reportedly working to clear debris from earlier mudslide activity this afternoon, but the highway was not closed.

“More thunderstorms will move over this area in the next few hours,” weather officials advised at about 6 p.m., adding a reminder that mudslides can send rocks, mud, vegetation and other loose materials down gullies and across roads.

If flooding occurs, motorists and anyone else in the area is advised to move to higher ground quickly.

This story will be updated if any flooding and or highway closures occur.
