Cross-country walker honoring 9/11 passes through area

The “most signed object in the world” is making its way through Garfield County this week, borne by Armand Young on his return journey across the country.

The 64-pound bundle of flags hosts 569,000 signatures, pledges for an act of kindness given along Young’s journey from California to New York City’s Ground Zero and back. Many of those who lost family in 9/11 have signed the flags, as have the relatives of fallen soldiers. Young has been walking across the country in stages since 2007, but he intends for this to be his final leg.

“I want to go home and be a normal guy with my wife again,” Young said Monday during a stop at the Post Independent.

He reached New Castle on Sunday night and usually makes 10 or 20 miles a day, so you might spot him in the Rifle area today.
