New Ute theater takes home award

Glenwood Springs wasn’t Garfield County’s only winner of a 2014 Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence.

Rifle’s New Ute Events Center won “Best Adaptive Reuse or Rehabilitation” from Downtown Colorado Inc.

The New Ute Theatre Society, or NUTS, a local nonprofit group helped the City of Rifle acquire and remodel the former 1940s-era movie theater. The remodeling was unveiled in May and the venue has hosted a sold-out concert featuring the cowboy comedy music group Riders In the Sky.

The remodeling project, which included $135,000 worth of exterior work in 2011, an $85,000 grant to remove asbestos, along with city and other funds was completed for just under $1.7 million.

The center’s programming ranges from films and concerts to school plays and musicals.
