Silt poised for recreational marijuana

Silt residents will soon be able to save a trip to Glenwood with the opening of Silt’s first retail marijuana center.

Rifle Remedies and owners Mike Miller and Dan Meskin, doing business as Green Cross Silt, won unanimous approval to open from Silt trustees at their regular meeting Tuesday.

Green Cross Silt, to be located at 502 Front St., will offer an array of products including marijuana, tinctures, smoking accessories and edibles no earlier than Oct. 1, per Colorado guidelines. Miller and Meskin have completed parking lot improvements and have finished a review by state regulators.

Meskin told trustees he and Miller are Silt residents and want to invest in the community. Miller said Silt’s favorable sales tax structure also influenced their decision.

Silt’s sales tax is Garfield County’s lowest, undercutting New Castle and Carbondale by .5 percent and Rifle by 1.25 percent. In addition to regular sales tax, retail marijuana customers pay an additional 10 percent state sales tax on all marijuana products.

A neighboring business was happy about the development. Misty Kearnes from The Country Florist is in the process of opening a coffee shop on Main Street and is “banking on that new business [Green Cross Silt]” to have a positive impact on the future coffee shop and her floral trade. “I just think that it will be a good way to open people’s eyes around here,” she said. “The traditional people around here might have a problem with it, but they will get over it.”

Sunshine Bus: Trustees agreed to contribute $500 to the Sunshine Bus for operation expenses related to the approximately 20 Silt preschoolers who will use the program this school year. The bus runs between Silt and New Castle on a mission to educate children whose families either cannot afford preschool programs, work nontraditional schedules or were referred by an area school due to capacity issues.
