SILT — Town officials gathered last week to thank the Garfield County commissioners and members of the Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District board with a plaque placed downtown recognizing their contribution to the town’s Main Street Improvement Project.
The project, which began last fall, is nearly completed, thanks to $1 million from Garfield County and $338,000 from the Federal Mineral Leasing District. The town contributed $145,000 for the three-phase project.
The improvements have included widening and paving sidewalks; installing handicapped ramps, trash receptacles, new fire hydrants, new water and sewer drainage under Main Street; a bus shelter; utility improvements; landscaping; and benches on every block.
“We’ve done everything we wanted to accomplish, but it’s not quite complete,” said Town Administrator Pamela Woods. “We’re still waiting on the benches and decorative poles for the street, and the trash receptacles have been ordered.”
Garfield County Commissioner Mike Samson expressed his pleasure in watching the project move forward, and Mayor Rick Aluise unveiled the plaque located at 7th Street and Main Avenue.
Wood said residents have noticed the changes to the downtown, which was done in part to help attract new businesses to the town — something members of the newly elected council in April said was one of their goals.
“The Main Street Improvement Project was done for our citizens and to attract new businesses to the town and for everyone to take pride in Silt,” Woods said.
