BOE continues to review contracts for Sirko, Stein

Staff Report

The Roaring Fork School District board of education will review superintendent and assistant superintendent contracts in executive session during its meeting Wednesday but is not scheduled to take any action.

“We hoped to be in a position to vote on the contracts this week, but we are just not quite there yet,” said Board President Daniel Biggs. “We are engaging in a careful and deliberate process as we develop contracts that secure our team for now and strong district leadership into the future.”

The meeting takes place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Basalt High School.

Under review are a two-year contract for Superintendent Diana Sirko, a two-year contract for chief financial officer Shannon Pelland, and a pair of contracts for chief academic officer Rob Stein — one for two years in his current role and another for three years as superintendent after Sirko’s departure.

The board will also discuss working with a management consultant to discuss roles and responsibilities of the senior management team and the board.

“Our goal is to develop a robust and sustainable organization that is not so dependent on individuals but built to be successful even when we face personnel changes,” said Biggs. “And while we all feel a sense of urgency, we are committed to getting this right and for everyone to be comfortable. It is worth the time and effort.”

The board arrived at the proposed contracts for Sirko and Stein in December after controversy erupted when it said it would consider a contract extension for Sirko. Many parents believed that Stein, who once was hired as superintendent, but stepped down after his wife suffered a head injury in a bicycle accident, was set to be superintendent when Sirko’s current contract expired.
