GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Cameron Horning began to display his skills on the basketball court during his sophomore year. Now, the Glenwood Springs High School junior guard has an award that shows just where those skills rank among the players in the Class 4A Western Slope League.

Horning, who finished the season as one of the top-scoring players in the league and, statistically, one of the better players in all of Class 4A, was named the league’s Player of the Year by its coaches as part of their all-league team selection. The selections, which were determined at the end of the regular season following the final games of the season on Feb. 14, were released for the first time on Monday.

Horning, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard, averaged 17.1 points per game, which ranked second in the WSL only to senior Eian Baier, who averaged 17.6 points but played in four fewer games than Horning this season. The Glenwood junior was also by far the league’s best overall shooter, hitting 81-of-100 attempts from the free throw line and 47 percent of his shots from the field (143 for 304), which included a 27-for-88 performance (31 percent) from beyond the 3-point line. He also averaged 2.4 steals per game and 2.5 assists to help make him a better all-around player for the Demons.

What’s more, his free-throw percentage ranks him fifth in all of Class 4A. Classical Academy’s Will Ball leads Class 4A at 84 percent (108 for 128).

His efforts not only earned him the league POY award, but it also helped Glenwood run the table on the 4A WSL schedule en route to its first league championship since the 2011 season.

Also winning top accolades from Glenwood was Demons coach Cory Hitchcock, who was named the league’s Coach of the Year in the same vote by the league’s coaches. The Demons finished the season with a 19-5 overall record, falling in the first round of the 4A state tournament to Thomas Jefferson.

Hitchcock coached a Glenwood group that included three first-team award winners in Horning, senior post player Zack Peterson and senior guard Brian Burbidge. Also earning first-team honors from a Garfield County school was Rifle junior guard Avery Lujan.

The Bears also had three honorable-mention award winners in senior Austin Boone, junior Luis Carreon and junior Morgan Robinson. Glenwood’s boys had a pair of honorable mentions in senior post player Will Gray and senior guard Jake Gentry.
