Crime Briefs: Traffic stop starts child porn investigation

A traffic stop last fall led to an underage pornography arrest on March 19.

Kyler James Quinn, 19, of Parachute, was believed to be racing another vehicle when we was pulled over on Interstate 70 near Parachute on Oct. 21, according to his arrest affidavit. Police suspected him of illegally purchasing marijuana and obtained a warrant for his cell phone. They found several references to underage pornography, and after obtaining a new warrant turned up numerous photos and several videos.

Quinn’s house was searched Jan. 27 and a laptop containing thousands of illegal videos and images was found hidden in his mattress. The affidavit further indicates that his search history included phrases like “how to be a drug dealer,” “can city police pull me over on the interstate,” as well as instructions on how to remotely wipe a cell phone.

Quinn was arrested for felony sexual exploitation of children.

SUSPECT FOUND HIDING IN SHED

Jose Matilde Navarro hid in a shed when Garfield County deputies responded to reports that he had been pounding on the door of home near Parachute and had almost hit a child while circling the block in his car.

The owner of the home told authorities that she had an infant in the home and that Navarro, 42, of Grand Junction, had appeared extremely drunk when he pounded on their door, refused to leave, and told them that he had a machete and a gun in his car, according to the arrest affidavit.

The affidavit further indicated that the father of the girl Navarro nearly hit took his keys aways before police arrived, prompting him to flee on foot.

Navarro denied driving drunk when deputies removed him from the shed and read him his rights. He agreed to roadside maneuvers which he was unable to finish due to poor dexterity. He declined a breath test.

Two empty beer cans, a half empty bottle of liquor, and a knife with a 10-inch blade were found in his car.

He was arrested for felony menacing as well as driving under the influence, driving under restraint, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and open container.
