Crime Briefs: Hey, buddy, got any change?

After vending revenues tanked inexplicably at the West Glenwood Mall, suspicion fell on Charles Edward Wilson, 64, of Rifle, who had reportedly been seen messing with the vending machine locks.

Glenwood Police confronted and searched Wilson and discovered a pair of metal picks and set of key tumblers, which Wilson claimed were used for cleaning his fingernails and removing fishhooks. They also turned up a silver dollar, $8.25 in quarters, $1.20 in dimes, and 35 cents in nickels.

Wilson was arrested for felony burglary, felony possession of burglary tools and petty theft.

POOL GAME ENDS IN STABBING

Confronted by Glenwood Police on April 13, Layla Duncan, 23, told them her friend, 20-year-old Drew Barber, had called her a drug user and prostitute before she “snapped” and stabbed him in the neck and shoulder.

According to the arrest affidavit, Barber told police from his hospital bed that he and Duncan got into an argument while playing pool downtown. Later, she called him asking to meet up so they could “settle things.” An argument ensued, which ended in what he thought were several punches from Duncan. Barber said he didn’t realize the extent of his injuries until he discovered he was bleeding.

Duncan was arrested for second-degree assault, a felony. She initially told police that she had thrown the knife in trash can along Grand Avenue, but ultimately surrendered a blade roughly two and a half inches long and an inch wide. She was later released on $1,000 bond.

WIFE THREATENED WITH KNIFE

A warrant was issued for Roy Luis Guillen-Gutierrez, 26, of Carbondale after his wife told police that he threatened her with a utility knife and punched her in the face before taking off with their baby on April 4.

According to his arrest affidavit, Guillen-Gutierrez returned the baby shortly after a neighbor called 911. He was arrested on April 14 for felony menacing and misdemeanor assault, which will be sentenced as domestic violence.

MORE THAN JUST BEER

When Carbondale Police pulled over Jorge Zavala-Ariaz for a defective license plate light early on the morning of April 12, they found him sucking on coins and smelling of alcohol, according to his arrest affidavit.

Zavala-Ariaz, 43, of Glenwood Springs, said he’d had three 12-ounce beers but denied having any other drugs. He was arrested for driving under the influence. A pat-down during booking yielded a folded-up dollar bill with a small amount of cocaine, adding possession of a controlled substance and introducing contraband, both felonies, to the charges.

In other drug news:

• Daniel Eduardo Guardado-Alvarez, 18, of Glenwood Springs, surrendered .98 grams of methamphetamine when he was pulled over for an outstanding warrant on April 13. He was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance and driving with a revoked license.
