Crime Briefs: I’m wide awake; where’s my brother?
A 40-year-old Colorado Springs man told police he’d been awake for three days on methamphetamine before he showed up at a Glenwood Springs home July 16 and accused the residents of holding his brother hostage.
According to the arrest affidavit, a local woman told police that she was with her teenage son and toddler daughter when the man burst in yelling for his brother and waving what she described as a machete. Officers arrived to find him on the side of the road with a hatchet in a sheath at his belt. After being ordered at gunpoint to lay down, the man complied and was arrested on suspicion of burglary, menacing and trespass, all felonies.
57-YEAR-OLD AND MINORS
After neighbors reported seeing a man pick up and drop off children at all times of night, Parachute police discovered the kids’ parents hadn’t given permission for any such rendezvous.
One of the kids later told police that the 57-year-old had given them rides in his truck, let them hang out at his house and even given her money for a cell phone, according to the arrest affidavit. Her parents had later instructed her not to hang out with him anymore.
Contacted by police on July 20, the man said he might have dropped the kids off late on some occasion but denied picking them up in the night.
He was arrested on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a felony, based on Parachute’s 11 p.m. curfew.
FIGHT AND A PILL LEAD TO FELONY
A fight in a trailer park near New Castle led to an arrest July 22 despite the 29-year-old suspect’s assertion that the other man had thrown the first punch.
The owners of the trailer where the fight occurred told police that it all started when a man and a woman turned up on their porch uninvited, cussed at them and refused to leave, the arrest affidavit reports. With his wife and preteen sons in the house, one of the homeowners said he stepped outside to confront the pair when the man threw a punch at him. He told police he tried to subdue the man while his wife called police and then hit the man with a folding chair, but he was punched in the head when he let the man up. Hearing sirens, the uninvited woman fled in a van and the man fled on foot.
Police later found the man under a boat near his own trailer. In his version of the story, the homeowners had been harassing them on the phone and had pointed a gun at them through the window. Since he was the restrained party in a series of protection orders, however, police arrested him on suspicion of violation of a restraining order, misdemeanor assault and trespass. When a search turned up a single pill of Vicodin, felony possession of a controlled substance was added to the list.
SEX ASSAULT ON CHILD
A Carbondale family called police on July 13 after their daughter told them her friend’s 46-year-old stepfather had touched her inappropriately through her clothes.
When her father confronted the man he denied the incident. However, after an interview with the girl, police arrested the man on suspicion of felony sex assault on a child.
