Mountain lion seen at Burlingame

Staff Report
The Aspen Times

A Burlingame Ranch resident spotted a mountain lion Thursday morning near the housing development, an Aspen police spokesperson said.

It is the first report police have received, though residents of the area have said there have been other recent sightings in the area, said Blair Flickinger, Aspen police spokeswoman.

The mountain lion was seen in the park next to the first bus stop off of Harmony Road, according to an email sent to Burlingame homeowners. A resident of the complex said another mountain lion was spotted in the area in the spring, prompting signs warning residents of the sighting.

In previous years, police have received other mountain lion sighting reports in the area, and believe the animals use the Maroon Creek corridor, Flickinger said.

Police notified the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department, which will put up more signs warning of the recent sighting, she said.

A phone message left Thursday for a parks and wildlife employee was not returned.

Mountain lion attacks on people are rare, though they could happen, Flickinger said.

If residents encounter a mountain lion, treat it like a bear, back away slowly and try to appear larger by raising arms above the head, according to the parks and wildlife website. It it behaves aggressively, throw stones or branches and don’t turn your back.

If a mountain lion attacks, fight back, the website states.
