Abbie Cheney, a junior at Glenwood Springs High School, was one of five students in the running for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in Colorado’s Bobby G musical theater awards — essentially the Tony Awards for high school musicals.

Last Thursday, all the nominees performed in front of a sold-out crowd at the Buell Theatre in Denver before the winner’s name was announced. Abbie did not win the award, but she is fired up as ever about the opportunity and her runner-up finish.

“We were not meant to live a small life,” Abbie wrote in a Facebook post the day after the award ceremony. “I am so thankful for all of you. And for the experience I have had the past few days. It has gone by so quick, but has been filled with so much love.”

She was nominated for her performance as Reno Sweeney in this year’s high school musical, “Anything Goes.” The male and female winners of the Bobby G travel to New York to represent Colorado at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Charlotte Movizzo of Ponderosa High School in Parker and Curtis Salinger of Durango are the two who will represent the state.

Kate McRaith, Glenwood Springs High School drama teacher and director of the musical, was one of the people who drove to Denver to support Abbie, who performed 18 bars of “I Get a Kick Out of You” and “Anything Goes” from the musical, and then “Life of the Party” from the musical “The Wild Party.”

“I’m still in awe of the talent and professionalism. All … nominees were outstanding. What I particularly loved is how excited the nominees who didn’t win were for those who did. It was beautiful,” McRaith said.

Abbie will back for her senior year, where the high school will be putting on “Addams Family” next spring.
