Yampah Mountain High students climb, hike to fight ovarian cancer one step at a time

For the 10th consecutive year, Yampah Mountain High School students will participate in the Climb4Life in Salt Lake City.

Climb4Life lets students turn their rock climbing passion into action to help find a cure for ovarian cancer, a cause near and dear to Yampah Mountain students. Yampah lost teacher Sandy Richardson to the disease about 10 years ago, and continued student participation in the Climb4Life supports the HERA Foundation’s effort to find a cure.

The Climb4Life series was started in 2001 to raise awareness in women who are healthy and active, empowering them to take charge of their health and wellness. Yampah students have enjoyed climbing at the event, but they have also become committed to building awareness about this often overlooked disease.

As part of the schoolwide fundraiser, Yampah students will be showing a film about Sean Patrick who lived in Carbondale and founded HERA and the Climb4Life. Sean was a national leader in spreading awareness about ovarian cancer, and raising research money to find a cure.

The half-hour film will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Carbondale Library. Yampah students have made HERA cups to sell at the event, and donations will be accepted. For more information about the event, call Mike Podmore, 970-945-9463, ext. 110.

The Climb4Life Utah, scheduled for Sept. 13-15, is HERA’s longest-running fundraising event, running now for its 12th year. It features a weekend of climbing, hiking or photographing in the canyons of the majestic Wasatch Mountains.

This event is part of a national series that raises money for ovarian cancer research and awareness initiatives. HERA brings together women, men and teens to climb for a cause. The mission of the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation is to stop the loss of women to ovarian cancer by promoting Health, Empowerment, Research and Awareness.
