Michael Bennett is returning to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.
Bennett, who was publisher of the Post Independent from 2004 through 2006, has spent the past three years as group publisher for Leader Publications, a group of community newspapers in southwest Michigan.
“I feel so fortunate for the chance to return to Glenwood Springs,” said Bennett. “Being a newspaper publisher is a privilege that allows the opportunity to actively help build a better community. I expect to get out and meet as many people as soon as possible to understand how the Post Independent can be of the most value to readers, businesses and the community as a whole.”
Bennett takes over from Stephanie Schafer who resigned effective Sept. 30 due to family issues. He is expected to be on the job at the Post Independent before mid-October.
“We’ll miss Stephanie, whose role and good work as a manager at Colorado Mountain News Media extended beyond just the Post Independent,” said Colorado Mountain News Media General Manager Jim Morgan. “We’re appreciative of her leadership, especially among our company’s sales managers.”
Bennett, who grew up near Philadelphia and is a graduate of West Virginia University’s journalism school, began his career in advertising sales at the Times in Trenton, N.J. Since 1986 he has held management and publisher roles with both paid and free-distribution newspapers.
In addition to the Post Independent, Bennett will have management responsibility for the weekly Citizen Telegram in Rifle and the weekly Grand Junction Free Press, a newspaper he also published during his previous tenure with CMNM.
“We’re truly excited to have Mike back,” said Morgan. “He’s a high-energy guy who is innovative and always seeking solutions for customers and consumers. And he brings a wealth of experience to the role of publisher in Glenwood.”
