GLENWOOD SPRINGS — The Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District has awarded more than $1 million in grants for public projects, programs and services in the county as part of its fall grant cycle.
Topping the list in the latest round of grants announced by the FMLD board on Friday will be a $338,163 award to the town of Silt for its ongoing Main Street improvements. The $1.4 million, three-phase project is aimed at beautifying Silt’s downtown commercial district from Third to Eighth streets, including new curb and gutter, trees, benches, potted plants and a perennial garden at Seventh and Main.
Other larger grants were awarded to the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority ($200,000) for a new park-and-ride facility in New Castle; the city of Glenwood Springs ($175,000) for the planned Three Mile Creek pedestrian bridge along Midland Avenue; and the Battlement Mesa Metropolitan District ($184,800) for maintenance and upgrades at the Battlement Mesa Recreation Center.
Another $107,000 was awarded through the FMLD’s Mini Grant program, including grants to:
• Battlement Mesa Metropolitan District for a maintenance vehicle, $25,000
• Garfield County Housing Authority to provide foreclosure counseling, $12,000
• Parachute/Battlement Mesa Parks & Rec for an irrigation system project, $25,000
• Rifle Housing Authority, for new curbing and sidewalk at the Jackson Heights Phase IV project, $20,000
• Town of Silt Water Plant, to help pay for new membrane, $25,000
The Garfield FMLD was formed in 2011 to administer and distribute federal mineral lease dollars that come to Garfield County through the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. To date, there have been four grant cycles.
Grants are awarded each spring and fall to political subdivisions of the state, such as municipalities, school districts, fire districts and special service districts.
