Distracted driver rolls car off Highway 82 near Glenwood Springs

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — A man driving north on Highway 82 on Monday morning was distracted when something fell onto the floor of his car and was trying to find it when his car went off the highway, into the ditch and rolled at least twice, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The accident occurred at 11:50 a.m., and caused no serious injuries, said Trooper Jeremy Tice, who reported to the accident scene.

The driver, Alvin Harbin, 39, who lives part-time with a relative in Carbondale and part-time in Grand Junction, suffered only minor injuries in the resulting wreck, Tice said.

Harbin’s car, a 2000 Ford Focus hatchback, had its front end mashed in nearly to the passenger compartment.

Harbin was taken to Valley View Hospital, and attempts to learn his condition Monday afternoon were not successful, although he was still at the hospital as of 2:20 p.m., being checked out by doctors, Trooper Tice reported.

According to Tice, Harbin was the sole occupant of the vehicle when it went off the side of the road, rolled once, went into the ditch and then went airborne before plunging back to earth nose-first and then rolling again.

Tice said Harbin was not sure what it was that distracted him, and told authorities that he felt something fall from his lap to the floor of the car and was reaching for it when the car left the road.

There is no suspicion that Harbin was driving while impaired by either alcohol or drugs, Tice reported, although Harbin was ticketed for careless driving.

Tice said Harbin was heading from his relative’s home in Carbondale, with the goal of getting to Grand Junction later in the day, when the accident happened.

The car had been towed and the road cleared of debris by approximately 1 p.m.
