Rifle man mounts flood-relief drive

Harry Colborn was on the Front Range not long ago and witnessed firsthand the devastation left in the wake of widespread September flooding. Rather than merely lamenting the destruction and displacement of families, though, he decided to figure out a way to help.

“I was driving home and thought, ‘Geez, isn’t there something I can do?’” he said.

As president of Rifle Equipment Inc., Colborn was in a better position than many to follow through. So what he decided to do was mount a flood-relief drive.

A 48-foot semi-trailer sits in the Rifle Equipment parking lot with large banner on the side proclaiming “Flood Victim Relief.”

“We’re trying to collect clothing, shoes and jackets for the flood victims on the Eastern Slope,” he said.

And toys.

Both new and “lightly used” items are being accepted at the Rifle collection point as well as one in Grand Junction.

In order to effectively distribute the items he collects during this effort, Colborn affiliated with the Broomfield organization A Precious Child, “a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to making a positive impact in the lives of disadvantaged and displaced children and families in Colorado,” according to its website.

Once he delivers the donations, A Precious Child will use its network to distribute them, he said, and the affiliation means donations are tax deductible. Colborn said he has forms at Rifle Equipment for those interested in tax deductions.

Donations are being accepted at the business during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday, Dec. 7, starting at 8 a.m.

While Colborn hopes to fill the large trailer in time to make a Dec. 16 delivery, he said Thursday that if he doesn’t, he will take a smaller truckload over in time for donations to be distributed before Christmas, and then keep collecting items to fill the large trailer for a delivery sometime early next year.
