Carbondale Trustee Allyn Harvey was selected this week to chair the Garfield Clean Energy Collaborative board for 2014.
Harvey was vice-chairman of the GCE board last year. Glenwood Springs Mayor Leo McKinney, who chaired the board in 2013, will serve as vice-chair this year.
The board also re-elected Judith Hayward of Parachute as secretary, and Garfield County Commissioner Tom Jankovsky as treasurer.
GCE is an intergovernmental partnership of 10 local government members working to make public buildings and facilities as energy efficient as possible, while also assisting private business and home owners with energy efficiency projects.
Last year, the various projects resulted in more than $1 million spent with contractors and suppliers, according to a GCE news release.
“At the beginning of 2013, we set a goal of 56 energy efficiency retrofits in homes and 46 retrofit projects in businesses and commercial properties,” Harvey said in the release.
“We more than doubled the residential goal, with 124 households taking on a total of 169 retrofit projects,” he said. “This winter, these families are enjoying more comfort and lower utility bills because of these efficiency upgrades.”
Carbondale-based Clean Energy Economy for the Region worked with GCE to provide free energy coaching. As a result, households spent nearly $620,000 on energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation and air sealing, high-efficiency furnaces, boilers and water heaters, new windows, swamp coolers, LED lighting and solar electric systems.
On the commercial side, 53 businesses and commercial property owners invested more than $430,000 in energy efficiency measures, including lighting retrofits, HVAC equipment upgrades and building envelope improvements, according to the GCE release.
As special revolving loan fund now has $243,000 available for homeowners to borrow to cover the costs of energy efficiency upgrades.
