Glenwood’s 6X6 is a true community art exhibit

The Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts welcomes 2014 in a community-oriented and creative fashion.

The first-ever “6x6 Community Art Exhibit” opens at 6 p.m. tonight with a dance performance and catered food.

The art center purchased 150 mini 6-inch-by-6-inch canvases and distributed them around the community to interested artists, families, students and designers of all ages and backgrounds. In turn, the 6x6 canvases have been painted on, decoupaged, screen printed, covered in photography, creatively colored and returned to the art center, where they will be on sale for $20 a piece to help benefit the center’s new fundraising goal of $100,000 by June 2014.

On display will be a variety of artistic styles presented by more than 50 artists. Included are artists such as Mary Noone, Ken Kulwiec, Noemi Kosmowski, Chad Steig,Terry Muldoon, Lisa Singer and Kathy Honea as well as multiple pieces by the Glenwood Springs Art Guild, local area high school and middle school students, art center members and students and families who love to paint together. It’s an expression of art from the people who live in the community.

“We have never had a true community art exhibit like 6x6, where there was no limit to who could enter,” said Christina Brusig, the arts center assistant director.

Tonight’s opening is in conjunction with the center’s annual meeting and a short dance performance featuring dance company members and dancers who recently won gold and high silver medals at the 24 Seven Dance Convention in Denver this past weekend. Catering will be provided by Zheng Asian Bistro, and light refreshments will be served. This event is free to the public, but seating is limited as the gallery will be filled with both artists, dancers and art center members celebrating the future of the Center for the Arts at 601 E. Sixth St. For information, contact Brusig at 970-945-2414.
