A slice of summer heaven

The formula for a winner? Pie plus summer divided by slices of fruited filling over braided crust equals the 2014 Glenwood Downtown Market pie contest grand champion: “Rhubarb is a Fruit” submitted by Sharill Hawkins.

The pie contest on Tuesday featured three categories: fruit, cream and exotic. Each category was evaluated by three judges.

The judges ranked the pies based on appearance, taste, crust and texture. The event coordinators tallied up the totals and sent the category winners back to the tables for the Grand Champion tasting round.

The three finalists were rhubarb (fruit), key lime (cream) and nutty pecan (exotic). Although the rhubarb pie won, judge Staci Williams said, “The key lime pie takes the cake.”
