How did your business start?
After completing a short-term physical therapy contract with Valley View Hospital, I teamed up with the former Peak Athletic Club in the midvalley to provide physical therapy services to its members. It was pretty accidental, actually. To be honest, I dialed the wrong number while following up on a job opportunity at another facility. Turns out, Peak was also in need of a physical therapist. I jumped in with both feet and haven’t looked back.
What do you sell?
I guess we sell wellness. Our medicine is exercise and awareness, meaning we empower our clients with a better understanding of their body giving them control over their recovery or performance. Simply knowing why your back hurts or what things to avoid with your shoulder gives you a tremendous amount of power over how you feel. There is such relief when you know “why” something is hurting and get on the right path to getting back to life. It is really rewarding to be able to do that for people.
What positive lessons did you learn during the recession?
We are pretty fortunate that the health care industry was not as deeply impacted by the recession as many businesses were. The biggest thing we saw change were how our clients became really careful with how they spent their health care dollars. With insurance companies passing more of the costs of care to their subscribers, it became even more important to demonstrate value to our clients and provide the services they needed in fewer appointments. High quality care has always been our focus but more so now than ever.
What strategy do you use to hire good people?
I think time has taught me that who someone is is ultimately more important than most aspects I might look for in a potential employee. In such a personal and intimate field as physical therapy,the connection or relationships that our therapists are able to form with their clients is the biggest factor that creates a great experience for our clients. There is actually research out there that supports that. Once I establish the baseline professional qualifications, I start looking for someone who is open, easy-going and compassionate. Humble is a big part of that as well as a zest for lifelong learning.
What is your strategy for growth in the next year?
We are really dedicated to serving our community this year while emphasizing that we are your neighborhood physical therapists. We are financially supporting local events and youth activities as well as participating in a volunteer capacity at local events offering injury support and other services. We recognize the importance of being part of our communities and building on the relationships with those who have put their trust in our clinic. I think as a private practice, we are uniquely positioned to really connect with our communities.
What is the best thing about running a business here?
It sounds cliche, but I would definitely say it’s the people. We have such a great variety of people here from so many walks of life. I love meeting people who are valley fixtures as well as those who have relocated here, drawn by this amazing valley we call home. There is such a feeling of community and this shared zest for life and nature and family. We are inspired by the warmth and generosity of our communities. There are not many places where you can forge these kinds of relationships. We get to see the people we have worked with out in our community and stay connected in a way I don’t think you can in most places.
