Teen killed in I-70 accident ID’d

Staff report

The teenager killed in an accident late Friday on Interstate 70 near Rifle was Ricardo Gomez of Dotsero, the Garfield County coroner said Monday.

Gomez, 15, was a passenger in a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck traveling east on Interstate 70 at mile marker 92 at about 11 p.m. Friday, the Colorado State Patrol said Saturday. The pickup, driven by a 17-year-old from Gypsum, veered off the left side of the interstate into the median, the patrol said.

The truck traveled in the median for 300 feet, tipped and then rolled for 150 feet before coming to rest on its roof, the patrol said in a news release.

Gomez was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to Grand River Hospital in Rifle but died about an hour later.

Garfield County Coroner Robert Glassmire said in a news release that Gomez suffered multiple injuries. He said there was no evidence that the youth was wearing a seat belt.

The driver also was taken to Grand River with serious injuries, the patrol said. The driver’s identity was not released, and the patrol said over the weekend that the accident was under investigation.
