The arrest warrant for Arturo Navarrete-Portillo, the sole suspect in the slaying of his wife, Maria Carminda Portillo-Amaya, will remain sealed from the public for now, Judge James Boyd decided Tuesday.

The decision followed a request by deputy district attorney Matt Barrett to have the warrant unsealed, but public defender Sara Steele said her office would likely object.

If no formal motion is filed by the time Navarrete-Portillo next appears in court, now scheduled for the end of the month, the warrant will be unsealed, Boyd added.

Navarrete-Portillo, 46, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 30-year-old wife on Feb. 16 in Carbondale, the town’s first homicide in 12 years. He crashed his Toyota 4Runner into the back of an empty cattle truck that morning and purportedly told a flight crew en route to a Grand Junction hospital that he had killed his wife.
