Woman injured in hiking fall outside of Basalt

Staff report

A 23-year-old woman was injured Tuesday when she fell on a hike in the Seven Castles area that features multiple waterfalls.

Basalt Fire Department was notified at 2:36 p.m. of a report of a woman who fell roughly 30 feet, according to Richard Cornelius, division chief with the fire department. She suffered injuries to her head and hip, Cornelius said. Her injuries were not life threatening. The woman’s town of residence wasn’t available.

The woman was hiking with a group of friends when the accident occurred, Cornelius said. It wasn’t immediately clear if she fell 30 vertical feet or slid down a waterfall. The accident occurred at the first in a series of waterfalls on the hike. The site was roughly 1.5 miles from where the fire department was able to stage.

There was no cell telephone coverage at the site so a companion hiked out to Fryingpan Road, about 4 miles outside of Basalt, and called authorities.

The first team of responders from the fire department reached the victim at about 3:17 p.m. and another team arrived a short time later. The woman was carried out of the rough terrain to where an ambulance was staged, and she was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital at 4:25 p.m. Cornelius said 11 people from the fire department responded.

The Seven Castles Hike isn’t marked with a 0 but it’s become popular from word of mouth. It’s also a high-risk route that features fixed ropes on a series of waterfalls.
